Client Context

The client was a high-net-worth private investor based in Germany with a successful prior exit. Over more than 30 years, he had developed a highly disciplined, rules-based investment methodology focused on commodities and pricing signals.

Despite the sophistication of the methodology itself, it existed only as fragmented, error-prone Excel spreadsheets. There was no scalable system, no automation, and no reliable way to monitor markets consistently or act on signals at frequency.

The client's initial goal was modest: bring structure and reliability to a personal investment process. Over time, the quality and consistency of the resulting system revealed a much larger opportunity.

The Problem

The client faced a fundamental constraint: There was no system.

Key challenges included:

Manual, non-scalable workflows

Each trading symbol required extensive manual effort, often exceeding an hour per symbol, with a high risk of human error.

Structural fragility

The Excel-based approach was impossible to extend. Even small changes introduced errors or broke existing logic.

No real-time visibility

Monitoring markets at scale was infeasible. The methodology could not be applied consistently or frequently enough to support disciplined execution.

No foundation for commercialization

Without a reliable, auditable, and secure platform, the methodology could not be shared, productized, or monetized.

This was not a case of improving an existing system. It was a case of building the first real system from scratch.

The Solution

I partnered with the client to translate decades of implicit domain expertise into a production-grade software platform.

The solution addressed several architectural focus areas:

    Stabilization of the core logic

    I began by cleaning, rationalizing, and validating the original Excel-based logic to establish a trustworthy baseline.

    Automated signal monitoring

    A backend system was built to ingest market pricing data at regular intervals and apply the proprietary methodology consistently across all tracked instruments.

  3. 3

    Cloud-based architecture

    The platform was migrated to Microsoft Azure to support availability, reliability, and access across multiple devices and environments.

    Scalable data processing

    Advanced financial calculations were implemented using a combination of technologies appropriate to the domain, with Python-based components integrated where specialized data processing was required. All results were persisted in a SQL database to ensure historical accuracy and traceability.

    API-first design

    A public-facing API was developed to expose validated investment signals securely and predictably.

    Authenticated web application

    A React / Next.js application was built on top of the API, providing users with dashboards, signal visibility, and trade oversight.

    Commercial and content integration

    The platform was integrated with a course platform and a Shopify-based D2C store, enabling seamless access to educational content, application features, and published material from a single central system.
