Long-Term Technical Partnership for an Advanced Excel Consultancy
Developed by R. Paulo Delgado.
Excel-centric client work extended into robust, multi-system software delivery through a sustained technical partnership.

Client Context
The client was a boutique consultancy whose core strength lay in advanced Excel models, complex financial logic, and highly refined spreadsheet-based workflows.
Their work supported a wide range of professional and commercial clients, with Excel deliberately positioned as both a domain interface and a computation layer.
As project complexity increased, the consultancy required capabilities beyond Excel alone, including backend systems, web platforms, secure workflows, and integration with external infrastructure.
The Problem
The consultancy's delivery capability was limited by the practical boundaries of Excel and a lack of in-house systems engineering capacity.
Key challenges included:
Excel as a single point of execution
Critical logic lived in spreadsheets that were difficult to extend into multi-user, secure, or automated workflows.
Increasing project heterogeneity
Client work expanded beyond a single problem domain, requiring web platforms, backend services, desktop applications, and cloud integrations.
Growing technical scope beyond core consultancy expertise
The consultancy required architectural and implementation support across technologies it did not internally maintain.
The challenge was not replacing Excel, but responsibly extending it into reliable, maintainable systems across many distinct projects.
The Solution
I partnered long-term with the consultancy to design, build, and maintain systems that complemented and extended Excel-based solutions across a wide range of engagements.
Key deliverables included:
- 1
Core accounting and operations platform
A large Excel-centric accounting system backed by SQL Server was evolved and maintained over many years, supporting weekly accounts, salaries, taxes, and statutory reporting for approximately 2,000 contractors.
- 2
Authorization and approval workflows
A web-based authorization and document-signing workflow was architected and implemented before such tools were widely available, providing access control, audit trails, and immutable signed outputs.
- 3
Web-based authorization platform
A separate web platform was maintained to handle user authorizations for an accounting client, integrating with their existing website and cloud infrastructure.
- 4
Forecasting, planning, and analytics tools
Multiple custom systems were delivered covering forecasting, financial planning, and operational analytics under strict confidentiality.
- 5
Custom end-to-end tool delivery
A complete bespoke system was architected and implemented for an international client, including direct on-site implementation and production handover.
- 6
Internal CRM rebuild
A failing in-house CRM integrated with the accounting platform was rebuilt using C#, WPF, and SQL Server, becoming the primary CRM system.
- 7
Document processing and data extraction
A PDF extraction tool was built and integrated with Azure AI services to interpret and structure data from unstructured documents.
- 8
Quoting and pricing systems
Custom quoting systems were developed to support complex pricing logic that exceeded what could be reliably handled in spreadsheets alone.
Architecture & Technology
Excel-Centric Architecture
- Excel used deliberately as a domain interface and expert computation layer
- Backend systems designed to extend, not replace, spreadsheet logic
Data & Persistence
- SQL Server as a central dependency across multiple systems
- Oracle and MySQL databases were also used depending on project requirements
- Heavy use of relational modeling for financial and operational data
Application Stack
- VBA, C#, .NET and other technologies for desktop applications and Excel integration
- Various web technologies including ASP.NET, PHP, JavaScript, and HTML/CSS for web platforms
- Web platforms integrated with cloud infrastructure
Workflow & Automation
- Custom authorization and approval flows
- Document generation and signing
- Integration with external services and APIs
Execution & Delivery
Work was delivered through repeated engagements over more than a decade, functioning as an embedded technical partner rather than a standalone vendor.
Key characteristics of delivery:
- Operated under the consultancy's brand while remaining directly involved when client interaction was required
- Handled architectural decisions where necessary
- Delivered production systems spanning spreadsheets, databases, desktop applications, and web platforms
- Adapted continuously as new project types and requirements emerged
- Maintained discretion across all client engagements
The partnership emphasized continuity, trust, and technical responsibility across a diverse and evolving project landscape.
Outcomes & Impact
- Enabled the consultancy to deliver solutions that were not feasible with Excel alone
- Expanded the range and complexity of projects the consultancy could accept
- Sustained a high-trust technical relationship over more than ten years
- Supported business-critical systems across accounting, authorization, analytics, and internal operations
- Allowed the consultancy to remain focused on domain expertise while technical delivery scaled
The collaboration turned a spreadsheet-focused consultancy into a provider of multi-system solutions without altering its core identity.
Why This Project Matters
- Demonstrates long-term technical partnership rather than isolated project delivery
- Shows disciplined extension of Excel-based systems into full software platforms
- Covers a wide range of technologies and system types within a single relationship
- Highlights discretion and trust in client-facing professional services work
- Reflects responsibility for systems that evolved over many years
